Don’t Waste Your Life
by John Piper

Reviewed by Robert Fields

In the early chapters of the book, Piper sets the table by stating that believers and servants of the Lord should be driven in life by a single passion of giving your all completely to the cause of Christ. The cause of Christ is to build the body of Christ by reaching others with whatever it takes to bring them to salvation in Jesus Christ. The warning of the author is very clear in every chapter – to get caught-up in all the interests and influences of our world would be a waste of life.

Book Review: High Calling High Anxiety

High Calling High Anxiety
by O. S. Hawkins

Reviewed by Bob Fields

This was a very interesting book for me to pick-up and read. The reason is that I have often stated that “stress” is so often over emphasized in our modern society. It seemed to me that “stress” was becoming another reason for people to excuse the poor decisions they were making in life. I may have softened-up a bit in recent years especially since my call to the position of IL-MO ARBC State Representative (only joking!).

We are faced with an important question. How do we deal with stress? God knows more about us than we know about ourselves. He gave us the first 12 verses of the Epistle of James to address this very issue. – O.S. Hawkins

Book Review: The Minister as Shepherd

The Minister as Shepherd
by Charles Jefferson

Reviewed by Greg Javaux

I enjoyed this book very much as Charles Jefferson does some good historical work on what the shepherd is and relates it to the many references to a shepherd in Scripture. Probably the best chapter for me was the “Shepherd’s Opportunity.” It challenged me to think more of my relationship to the people as a shepherd to sheep and how that relationship can be expressed in today’s busy world. The chapter on “Shepherd’s Temptations” was a good one to remind me of the subtle temptations that come my way in my position. The last chapter, “Shepherd’s Reward,” was very encouraging to keep going, even when it is tempting to quit and think it’s not worth it to keep shepherding these wayward sheep! It is always good to read a book that challenges me to be a better pastor to people. You can purchase this book at CBD.
